Synastry Houses

Synastry house overlays show which areas of life another person activates when their planets fall into your astrological houses. The planet person brings the planetary function; the house person experiences that energy in the territory of the house. This makes house synastry especially useful for understanding why the same person can feel romantic, unsettling, comforting, inspiring, private, or intensely consequential in different relationships.

How house overlays work

Take one person’s planet and locate the house it occupies in the other person’s chart. Venus in a partner’s Eighth House, for example, brings Venusian themes of affection, attraction, pleasure, and values into the house person’s territory of intimacy, trust, shared resources, and psychological exposure. The reverse overlay may be completely different.

Every planet can enter every house, so house synastry creates a large range of possible interactions. Personal planets are usually felt immediately because they describe everyday identity, emotion, attraction, communication, and action. Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto, Chiron, and the lunar nodes can add commitment, disruption, idealization, transformation, vulnerability, and developmental pressure.

The 12 houses in synastry

The First House emphasizes identity, appearance, immediacy, and how one person experiences the other’s presence. The Second concerns values, self-worth, security, money, and possessions. The Third activates communication, learning, siblings, and daily movement. The Fourth reaches home, roots, family, privacy, and emotional foundations.

The Fifth House brings romance, pleasure, creativity, play, and children into focus. The Sixth concerns routines, work, service, health habits, and practical cooperation. The Seventh is the traditional partnership house, highlighting commitment, projection, equality, conflict, and one-to-one bonds. The Eighth House intensifies trust, sexuality, shared resources, secrecy, power, and transformation.

The Ninth House expands belief, travel, higher learning, culture, and worldview. The Tenth involves career, reputation, direction, ambition, and public roles. The Eleventh concerns friendship, networks, community, and future plans. The Twelfth House reaches dreams, solitude, hidden attachment, projection, compassion, sacrifice, and unconscious material.

Which houses matter most for relationships?

Every house can matter in an important relationship. The Fifth, Seventh, Eighth, and Twelfth often attract special attention because they describe romance, partnership, intimacy, and hidden psychological experience. The Fourth can be equally powerful for shared home and family life. The Second and Sixth may become decisive when a relationship moves from attraction into money, routine, work, and practical dependence.

A strong romantic bond can therefore involve several houses at once. Fifth-House contacts may make two people enjoy one another, Seventh-House contacts can sharpen the sense of partnership, Eighth-House overlays deepen exposure and merging, and Twelfth-House contacts can make the bond feel private, dreamlike, elusive, or psychologically difficult to name.

Who feels a house overlay more?

The house person usually feels the planet entering a specific area of life. The planet person expresses their planetary nature into that field and may feel drawn to act there. Both people participate, though their experiences differ. A Moon person may instinctively nurture; the house person experiences that Moon in the concerns of the house. A Mars person may pursue or provoke; the house person feels where that pressure lands.

Reciprocal overlays strengthen a theme. If both partners place personal planets in each other’s Eighth Houses, intimacy and trust may become central for both. When only one direction is emphasized, the relationship can feel asymmetrical.
