Astrology Houses
Astrology houses divide a birth chart into twelve areas of life. Planets describe functions and drives; signs describe the style in which those functions operate; houses show the life territory where they become concrete. Reading the houses helps connect a chart with identity, money, communication, home, creativity, work, relationships, intimacy, belief, career, community, and the hidden inner life.
How do astrology houses work?
The Ascendant begins the First House in many common chart systems and depends on the time and place of birth. From there the chart is divided into twelve houses. A planet’s house position describes the area of life where that planet’s symbolism becomes especially active. A Moon in the Fourth House emphasizes emotional life through home and roots; Mars in the Tenth can bring drive and conflict into career and public direction.
Houses and zodiac signs use different symbolic layers. The First House can share themes of immediacy and self-presentation with Aries without becoming identical to Aries. House interpretation becomes clearer when the actual sign on the house cusp, its ruling planet, and planets physically placed in the house are read together.

Planets in houses
Planets answer a different question from houses. The Sun concerns identity and vitality; the Moon emotional regulation and attachment; Mercury communication; Venus attraction and values; Mars action and desire; Jupiter growth and belief; Saturn limits and responsibility; the outer planets add slower collective and psychological themes. Their house positions show where those functions repeatedly seek expression.
Several planets in one house create emphasis, while an empty house still remains part of the chart. Its sign, ruler, aspects to that ruler, and transits can activate the house throughout life.
Birth time and house systems
House positions depend strongly on birth time. A small time difference can move the angles and may shift a planet near a house cusp. When birth time is uncertain, house interpretation deserves caution. Planetary sign positions usually remain more stable over short time differences.
Astrologers use several systems for dividing the chart, including Placidus and Whole Sign houses. A house system changes some cusps and can move planets from one house to another. Consistency matters when comparing interpretations: know which system produced the chart before drawing conclusions from a house placement.
